Rwanda Green Growth Local Government Awards

The Rwanda Green Growth Local Government Awards recognise districts (nationwide) and sectors (in the City of Kigali) promoting green growth while addressing development concerns.

The awards are open to districts across the country (excluding Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge) and sectors in the City of Kigali.

Districts (nationwide) and sectors (in the City of Kigali) wishing to participate in the Rwanda Green Growth Local Government Awards must have a demonstrated track record as a green growth innovators and promoters during the period 2016-2018. Participating districts are required to complete an application form.

EVALUATION COMMITTEE

The committee evaluating the submissions from districts and sectors will include representatives from the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Local Government, the Rwanda Environment Management Authority, the Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA), Rwanda Housing Authority, UNDP Rwanda, and the Global Green Growth Institute.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The awards encourage districts (nationwide) and sectors (in the City of Kigali) to champion green growth and strengthen its inclusion in planning and implementation processes. They aim to inspire local government entities, highlight success stories and shed the light on model districts and sectors that thrive in the face of any challenges.

The evaluation will consider the positive impact of the initiative/s, strategic value and creativity of green growth initiatives. The green growth initiatives should demonstrate a blending of social inclusiveness, economic benefits as well as environmental protection and climate resilience.

When applying, districts and sectors must indicate the role they played in facilitating the green growth activity or investment, and the role of central government or other partners.

AWARD

Winners will be honoured with trophies, certificates and in-kind prizes at a special concert and awards ceremony during the Africa Green Growth Forum.

  • The winning district will receive a grant to support green growth projects at community level. Technical assistance will be provided to establish appropriate mechanisms to ensure the grant provided delivers on its objective of supporting small scale community projects qualifying as pioneers for green growth in the district.
  • The winning sector in the City of Kigali will receive funding for a specified good practice green growth initiative to enable it to be scaled-up.

AWARD CATEGORIES

The awards are divided into two categories: rural and urban green growth. The rural green growth category will be open to the 27 districts outside of the City of Kigali. The urban green growth category will be open to sectors with the City of Kigali.

Rural Green Growth

The rural green growth award will focus on the following:

    • Solid and liquid waste management
      • Collection
      • Reuse, recycling and disposal
  • Water Resources Management
    • Rainwater harvesting
    • Development of water storage facilities
  • Energy
    • Green energy generation
    • Provision of green energy
  • Sustainable Land Management
    • Soil Protection
    • Watershed Management

Urban Green Growth

The urban green growth award will focus on the following:

  • Pollution Control
    • Clean Cooking
    • Waste Management
  • Integrated Land Use Management
    • Sustainable Building
    • Green Spaces
    • Green Mobility
    • Water Resources Management
